No fresh case of Ebola in Lagos - Lagos state Government says

The Lagos state government says no fresh case of Ebola virus has been discovered in the state or in any part of the country.

According to the Special Adviser to the Lagos state Governor on Public Health, Dr (Mrs) Yewande Adeshina, all the 59 people who had direct or indirect contact with late Liberian Patrick Sawyer who died last Friday in Lagos from the virus, have been traced, tested and found to be hale and hearty and have not exhibited any unusual body temperature or any other symptoms of the dreaded virus. DSS Men Storm Osun Ahead Guber Polls

 

OSOGBO--Operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, yesterday stormed Osogbo, the Osun State capital and other major towns in the state preparatory to the August 9 governorship election in the state, even as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, assured that the poll would be free and fair.
The DSS operatives were strategically positioned in major areas of the town while some moved round major streets.
It was gathered that over 5,000 operatives were deployed to the state to maintain law and order before and during the governorship election.
Some of the operatives who wore black T shirts and with masks on their faces moved round the state capital and shot sporadically into the air, scaring many residents.

Nigeria’s Jonathan inaugurates new 64-page e-passport

 

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to protect the image of the country by shunning uncomplimentary statements and actions.Inaugurating the 64-page e-passport on Wednesday in Abuja, Jonathan said that the pages of the travelling document had to be increased from 32 to 64 pages to cater for frequent travellers who change their passport almost every other month because of limited pages for visa.
He urged officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service to protect the integrity of the passport by ensuring that it cannot be easily faked.
Jonathan also advised officials who man the nation’s airports to ensure that they conduct themselves in a manner that will portray the country well before visitors to the country.
The new passport, which takes effect from August 1, attracts a fee of about $1330.

Fourth female suicide bomber hits Nigeria's Kano, kills six

 
KANO Nigeria (Reuters) - A female suicide bomber blew herself up in a college in northern Nigeria's biggest city of Kano on Wednesday, killing six people and critically wounding another six in the fourth such attack by a woman in Kano in less than a week, a security source said.
The bomber targeted youths who were looking at a notice board for national youth service in Kano Polytechnic, the source said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although militant group Boko Haram, which is fighting for an Islamic state in religiously-mixed Nigeria, has repeatedly bombed Kano as it radiates attacks outwards from its northeast heartlands.

Jonathan appoints Osita Chidoka Aviation Minister

Mr. Chidoka was head of the Federal Road Safety Corps
President Goodluck Jonathan has named Osita Chidoka, the former Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, as new Aviation Minister.

Mr. Chidoka was sworn in Wednesday alongside Abubakar Olanrewaju, who was appointed National Planning Minister.
Mr. Olanrewaju, from Kwara State, replaces Shamsudeen Usman, who was removed last September.
Mr. Chidoka replaces Stella Oduah, fired in February amid allegations of mismanagement of public funds.
Until Mr. Olanrewaju's appointment, the National Planning Commission was supervised by the Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda.

Second explosion rocks Kaduna

A second explosion has hit Kaduna town, barely two hours after a blast killed at least 25 people.
A witness said there were many bodies at the scene of the second attack which occurred at the busy Kawo bus stop within central Kaduna.

The first blast targeted at a prominent Islamic cleric, Dahiru Bauchi.

One witness said the second bomb was concealed in a Golf car, just as the first.

"There are also many casualties at the moment and the police have cordoned the area with both rescue team and the police evacuating injured victims," a witness said.

West Brom Albion Signs Brown Ideye For A Record Breaking Fee

West Bromwich Albion have signed Nigeria forward Brown Ideye for an undisclosed club record fee.

The former Dynamo Kiev man becomes the fifth summer signing of the Baggies and has beat Stephane Sessegnon's 5.5 million pounds record transfer from Sunderland last year. Ideye, 25, was part of the Nigeria squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations title in South Africa last year. He scored a goal in the semi final 4-1 routing of Mali. However, he was dropped from the provisional World Cup squad by coach Stephen Keshi in May.

According to West Brom, the striker who will wear number 9 has signed a three year contract with the option of an additional year. He has since passed a medical at the Hawthorns and agreed to personal terms.

Malala's Advice to President Jonathan and Boko Haram

To mark her 17th birthday, Malala Yousafzai, the young, precocious Pakistani girl who was shot and left for dead by the Taliban two years ago, visited Nigerian in solidarity with the over 200 girls abducted by members of the criminally- minded members of the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad, which in English means, "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad", and otherwise known as Boko Haram.

She met some of the girls who escaped from the group; and she also had audience with Nigeria's Minister of State, Education, Nyesom Wike. But Wike, true to type, shot himself on the foot when he tried to explain the issue of out-of-school children. He said of the 10.5 children, nine million were from the North, to which Malala's father pilloried him: "I don't know about the system that is here, we only know that there are over 10.5 million children that are out of school. But it brings very bad name to the country".

Army Embarks On Shooting Test For Soldiers

The 3 Armored Division of the Nigerian Army said it will embark on firing test of its soldiers to ascertain their level of accuracy in weapon firing and handling from tomorrow.

The two-day exercise is meant to test the soldiers dexterity in handling weapons.

A statement by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations from the Maxwell Khobe cantonment, Colonel Texas Chukwu, said: "The exercise involves shooting of guns and is meant for soldiers of the 43 Division undergoing basic engineering course for 2014".

According to him: "The two-day shooting exercise, which will start from Monday 21st July at the 3 Division Military Shooting Range Miango in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, is part of the course

APC chieftain says removal of its Governors will not stop party from defeating PDP

National Welfare Officer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Dikko Radda has said that the removal of Murtala Nyako as governor as well as the plan to impeach other APC governors will not deter the party from winning the 2015 elections.

This, he hinged on the belief that Nigerians were eager to vote out the Peoples Democratic Party-led federal government in 2015.

Dikko, in an interview with Leadership, also alleged that the request by President Goodluck Jonathan to borrow $1bn to tackle insurgency had an undisclosed motive.

NOBEL Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has likened Nigerian soldiers to the dreaded Islamist sect, Boko Haram.

The literary icon, speaking on Saturday night at the grand finale of Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa, described as shocking, the alleged burning on Friday last week of some BRT buses on Ikorodu road, Lagos, by protesting soldiers.

Soyinka called on President Goodluck Jonathan to take up the matter.

“I demand the Commander-in-Chief to do something about it; example must be set. This is not the first time. We have had enough,” he said.

He further wondered why those soldiers considered their lives more special than those of the citizens, particularly in a country where people have continued to die through senseless acts of terror.

The delegates who met with Conference’s Chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi and his deputy, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi insisted on “proper ballot process” and queried why the conference’s leadership refused to use ballot boxes and papers already with the secretariat, accusing the leadership of alleged “floundering” on resolutions.

Enyeama pockets over N20m as World Cup reward

 

Some of the Super Eagles stars like goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama received $130,000 ( over N20 million) each as appearance fee for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

“It was not a flat rate, but some of the players like Enyeama, who were involved in both the qualifiers as well as the World Cup in Brazil got as much as $130,000,” said one official.

63 abducted Borno women reportedly escape from Boko Haram

63 women out of 70 women who were reported to have been abducted by Boko Haram men in Borno state between June 12th - June 14th have regained their freedom. Reports by government sources as well as members of the Borno state vigilante group confirmed their escape.

An official of the Borno state vigilante group, Abbas Gava while confirming the escape to journalists in Borno, said the women made the bold move to escape on Saturday July 5th while the sect men were attacking a military base in Damboa. Continue...

Nigerian military: Over 50 attackers die in failed bid to take bases

 

(CNN) -- Nigeria's military claimed Saturday that its forces killed over 50 attackers who'd tried to storm bases and police stations in the African nation's violence-ravaged state of Borno.

Most of the troops were out patrolling nearby villages when the fighters, which the military described as "terrorists," launched their attack Friday night in Damboa, according to a defense ministry statement.

Emir Of Kano Withdraws Suit Against FG

 

The new Emir of Kano, Mohammadu Sanusi (II) has withdrawn his suit at the National Industrial Court challenging his suspension as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The court had at the last adjourned date fixed today to enable Sanusi’s counsel, consult him (Sanusi) as to whether the suit will be terminated or not, in view of his recent appointment as the Emir of Kano.
During Friday’s proceedings, counsel to Sanusi, Mr Kola Awodein (SAN), told the court that they have filed a notice of discontinuance pursuant to Rule 19 of the court rules.
Counsel to the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) did not oppose the discontinuance but noted that he is having a pending motion seeking for the stay of execution of the

'BRT bus did not kill any soldier' - LAGBUS official explains what really happened

LAGBUS Asset Management Limited, operators of BRT buses have denied that one of their buses killed a soldier. Soldiers went on a rampage yesterday around the Palmgrove area of Lagos, stopping BRT buses, asking passengers to get down, beating the drivers, destroying the buses before eventually setting them on fire. The damage yesterday is said to be worth over N100million.

But speaking about it, a LAGBUS official said they had nothing to do with it, explaining that they only found a corpse in their bus and went to report it to the police;

"By 10 p.m. last night, one of our buses broke down at Onipanu; by 11 p.m., a rescue team with a van went to the scene to tow the bus. The just concluded event which started on Friday June 20, 2014 with a medical outreach to the citizens of the community. The nurses were conducting series of medical tests such as BP, HIV, BLOOD SUGAR…etc and were being counciled by the doctor of which those with issues were given proper medical medications by the doctors. The citizens of the community were very happy and grateful because those of them with ailments knew their health status and were given free medication. The well trained medical personnels were from both The General Hospital, Kabba and Eyifemi Clinic, Kabba. The exercise was conducted by an NGO, Ripples in the person of Mrs Anne Phillips whose focus is Empowering African Women. The was a huge turnout by the people of the community for the MOT.
On Saturday which was the D day of the OGIDI Event was a really huge one it was graced by dignitaries around the world. The event which  started by 10:00am with an opening prayed thereafter an opening performance by a cultural troupe. After the introduction of dignitaries, they had cultural displays to the OLOGIDI, HRH Oba (Alh.) Rabiu Oladimeji, The Ologidi of Ogidi  by different amazing groups from the community and other communities. These presentations were truly awesome. Some of the displays were from the Olokoro and Olu-otun, men, women, farmers, hunters…. etc Also we had the masquerades who came out to grace the event, of which were “Agere masqurade, Olode, Agbo” cultural displays were also presented by the Ebira community, Nike Art Gallery Troupe, Egbe Gbarufu Ilare-ogidi group etc. The occation was graced by The Representatives of The Etsu of Nupe, Prof. Eyitayo Lambo (Fm r. Minister of Health) who was the Chairman of the occasion), HRH Oba (Dr.) Arc. Aderemi Adedapo (Alayemore of Ido-osun), Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf (Member House of Reps), Hon.Dino Melaye (Fmr. Mem. House of Reps), Mallam Mohammed Haruna (Fmr MD, NAN), Dr Abdulahi Muku (Dir. Gen. National Gallery of Art), Chief Mrs Nike Okundaye (Yeyeoba of Ogidiland, Nike Art Gallery, Lagos) who was the Mother of The Day was with His Excellency, Mr Michael Arion, the Ambassador and head of delegation of the European Union. After the cultural presentation which included the presentation of the new yam to the Ologidi by Chief Mrs Nike Okundaye (Yeyeoba of Ogidiland), it was followed by a fund raising for the development of the community of which Chief Femi Ajisafe (General Manager,Research Planning & Environmet, National Inland waterways Authority) was the Chief luncher. There were huge donations by the dignitaries present in the occation Of which APC Senetorial Candidate Hon. Dino Melaye (Fmr. Mem. House of Reps) donated generously the sum of N1million to the community. After the donations, a keynote address was delivered by Mallam Mohammed Haruna (Fmr MD, NAN) who emphasized that the key success of a community is education, he also Praised them for the projects which have been completed in the community; Water project, Cottage Hospital etc. He said that the society should invest more in the basic education of the community which is the Primary and Secondary education. After which there was Investiture of new chiefs of which Hon. Chief Omolade Ibikunle was a beneficiary. After that, there was a presentation of gifts from the different delegates to the community which led to the cutting of the Ogidi Cake by the the Representative of The Etsu of Nupe, The Ologidi Of Ogidilaand and other dignitaries which crowned the close of the event.
