Man jailed 45 years for stealing Gov Aregbesola’s N50k phone

A 31 year old named Kevin Ighodalo (pictured above), has been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court for stealing a Sony Ericsson phone said to be worth about N50,000 belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State. Below is how Punch is reporting it

Ighodalo stole the phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27, 2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College, Osogbo.

Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud.
He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion.

Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term, held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor.

The jail term, which Falola pronounced will run concurrently, means that Ighodalo will spend the next 10 years behind bars.

Assistant principal state counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora, told the court that the convict had served six-year imprisonment in Ikoyi prison custody in connection with a murder case in 2005.

Counsel to Ighodalo, Mr. Ameachi Ngwu, prayed the court to commit him to community service, stressing that the convict should not be incarcerated but rather be placed where people could see him as a convict.

ASUU Begins Strike In UNIABUJA

The University of Abuja chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) started a two-week warning strike on Monday over the failure of government to implement a visitation panel report.

Dr Clement Chup, the Chairman, University of Abuja branch of ASUU, who disclose this at a press conference, said Federal Government's delay in implementing the white paper was not in the interest of the university.

He said the union's resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike followed government's failure to listen to the university's longstanding complaints over governance crisis at institution.

According to him, the specific element of the crisis is the continuing delay in the implementation of the recommendations of the report of the 2012 Presidential Visitation Panel.

Chup said the implementation of the report would no doubt commence the needed cleansing and rebuilding that would bring lasting solution to the crisis in the university.

"In view of the deliberate delay of Government to commence implementation of the Dr T. C. Osanakpo Report, eight months after submission, ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, has no option but to embark on a two-week warning strike.

"The Special Visitation Panel has carefully and painfully after eight weeks of work come up with a report that left no one in doubt of the near collapse of the system.

"We understand that a staggering amount of almost N400million of tax payers' money was expended on the panel and that the panel submitted its report to government on Sept. 21, 2012," he said.

In his reaction, Dr Mohammed Damagum, the Chairman, ASUU Integrity Group, University of Abuja, condemned the warning strike, saying members of his group should ignore the action.

He said the call for the strike was unscrupulous, unpatriotic, maliciously calculated and ill-conceived to destabilise the hard-earned peace in the university.

The group chairman called for support for the newly constituted university governing council, adding that the strike was not in the interest on the university.

Controversial N4.5billion Yacht Hotel disappears from Lagos

The controversial N4.5 billion Sunborn Yacht Hotel, brought from England and moored on the Lagos waters for over four years, has finally disappeared from the state after the controversies surrounding its ownership.

It will be recalled that the custom built yacht, with 102 elegant suites, arrived the Lagos waters in November 2008  and instantly became a cynosure of all eyes.

The yacht, expected to serve as a four_star hotel, was, however , bedeviled by controversies since its arrival which led to it abandonment and subsequent rusting away on the water-ways.

When Vanguard visited the quay, by the Army Officers' Mess at Marina, Lagos Island Local Government Area, there was no sign that such expensive and eye catching structure ever berthed there.

Enquiries from the state government and even residents of the state yielded no result as no one could  say specifically what happened to the multi_purpose built yacht that moored on the state water for over four years.Commissioner for Tourism, Mr. Oladisun Holloway, when asked to comment on the development denied the state government's knowledge of the where about of the supposed 'first African luxury hotel on water'.

According to Holloway; "As citizens of the state can't find it, so is the state government also. The government can't say precisely where the Yacht is berthed at present."

The commissioner reiterated that "the state government doesn't have any commitment in the yacht. And I don't know why the residents of the state should be interested in whereabouts of the Sunborn yacht.

The four-star hotel, originally owned by the City of London, was conceptualised as a leisure and  business centre to service the higher echelon of Lagos society. Mr. John Smart, a boat operator, said he could not say accurately the whereabouts of the four_storey multi_purpose built yacht, since removal last month.

According to Smart; "I cannot say the date when it was removed but all we saw on one fateful day was a large number of people who crowded the Sunborn Yacht and towed it away with another ship.  They didn't inform anyone where they will be taking the yacht to and since then we were yet to see it."

So, the question on the lips of residents and concerned citizens which has remained unresolved is; "where is the Sunborn Yacht Hotel and who is behind the deal". Time will tell.

Community Battles Lagos Church over Noise Pollution

There seems to be no end in sight to the feud between residents of Mojisola Street, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos State and Evangelical Apostolic Church.

The residents are accusing the church, owned by Prophet Olatunji Talabi, aka Lesekese, of causing noise pollution in the area anytime it holds its services.

They said the noise emanating from speakers at the church, which was under construction, was "deafening".

It was learnt that a number of petitions had been sent to the state government over the issue.

In one of the petitions signed by Olusegun Olomofe, and  sent to Governor Babatunde Fashola, the residents stated that  government agency in charge of controlling such excesses was incapable of performing its statutory function.

The petition reads in part, "Since Evangelical Apostolic Church moved into the neighbourhood, its activities have been inimical to the general well-being of the residents and the noise level unbearable.

"Many elderly residents are not able to sleep whenever their service is in session."

The Chairman, MEGA Community Development Association, Mr. A.A. Bilesanmi, also showed our correspondent some letters of complaint written by the association to the police, Lagos State Environment Protection Agency and the Lagos State Government.

Personally, I am of the opinion that something should be done about this Noise pollution by religious houses, yes, Churches and Mosques.

I mean our right to sanity in this country still stands right?
The MEGA CDA is made up of upper and lower Mojisola Street; Emmanuel Olorunfemi Street; Alimi Ogunyemi Street; Prince Ajenifuja Street and Gbagba Crescent.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the government initially replied the residents of the street.

The environmental protection agency wrote to the Chairman of the Mojisola Street Residents Association, Mr. Oye Balogun, saying the church had agreed to stop using external speakers; loud musical instruments, microphones and drums except on Sundays.

The letter by LASEPA said, "Sunday services should hold between 8am and 1pm. Evening services, including Sundays, should not exceed 8pm.  Vigils should be reduced to once a month and must be without loudspeakers and musical instruments. The church is to ensure good neighbourliness with residents in the area."

However residents complained that nothing had changed.

Nigeria's First Lady, Patience Jonathan Is Ill Again Reports SaharaReporters

Nigeria's First lady's Patience Faka Jonathan, has deteriorated again, becoming so critical that she has been from a proposed official visit to Namibia and South Africa to be embarked upon by her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan according to online media, SaharaReporters.

Sources in Aso Rock said Mr. Jonathan will fly out for the four-day junket to the two Southern African countries on May 5, and return to Abuja on the 10th.

Medical sources stated that Mrs. Jonathan remained unwell after returning from Germany about three weeks ago. She had stated that her trip, which started on March 17 from Paris took her through Italy to Germany where she claimed she tendered to her foster mother, "Mama Sisi."

Since returning from that trip, the First Lady has remained under medical observation at the presidential villa.

Her latest trip to Germany is the third medical trip since her prolonged trip last year where she spent several months in a Wiesbaden hospital, although she denied those details upon her return.

In a thanksgiving service in February, she confessed her travails, including nine surgeries within one month, and declaring she had died but was saved by God.

The presidency has refused to disclose the exact nature of her ailment, but medical sources say she is suffering from a deadly ailment that may be manageable.

Governor Fashola builds first suspension bridge in Nigeria

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde has finished building the first suspension bridge in Nigeria. The 1.358km bridge, which will link Ikoyi (Alexander Street) to Lekki (Admiralty Way), cost about N29 billion to build and a toll will be collected to recoup the investment. The link bridge was built by Julius Berger.

Al Qaeda threatens to hit France

France is "playing with fire" in Mali, the brother of Al-Qaeda's chief said in an interview published Monday, warning that Islamic fighters would retaliate in the African nation and "on French territory".
France launched a military offensive in Mali in January to help the army push back Islamic extremists who had taken hold of the north, and has now begun a phased withdrawal of its 4,500-strong force.

"France is playing with fire… By attacking Mali, France lit the fuse and will suffer the consequences," Mohammed al-Zawahiri, the brother of Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, told French weekly Le Point.

"The reaction of jihadi fighters is likely to be strong, be it in Mali or on French territory.
"France kills our children, we must respond. We have neither bombs nor planes, but our resources allow us to take hostages to defend ourselves," said the Egyptian Islamist.

"Will we, Muslims, come to Europe and attack you because we are opposed to secularism and Catholicism? You have no right to intervene in our beliefs."

France's military intervention in Mali saw French-led troops recapture key towns in northern Mali that had been occupied for months by Islamist groups linked to Al-Qaeda.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as Al-Qaeda chief in 2011, had already warned France at the beginning of April that it would meet in Mali "the same fate as America in Iraq and Afghanistan".

Mohammed al-Zawahiri was sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt in 1998 on charges of undergoing military training in Albania and planning militant operations in Egypt.

He was arrested a year later in the United Arab Emirates and handed over to Egyptian authorities.
He was released along with other prisoners in 2011 after the fall of Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak, only to be rearrested within 48 hours.

He was subsequently awarded a retrial and was acquitted in March 2012.

Pastor T. B Joshua Delivers Nollywood Actress From Witchcraft

Renowned Nollywood actress Camilla Mberekpe was on Sunday, April 28 delivered of an alleged demon that had been tormenting her life and impeding her success.

The deliverance which was aired on Emmanuel TV and monitored by DailyPost took place during last Sunday service at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Nigeria, headed by Prophet T.B. Joshua.

Like a Nollywood drama, the demon that possessed the actress, who is known for her roles as a mother or wicked step-mother, confessed to have been with her since childhood.

According to the spirit, which laughed hysterically, it "came from the water. She came from the deep ocean" where she operates from.

With screams and chants, she said "nothing is working out for many years as she [Camilla] remains there. What does she have to account for? Nothing!"

"I did it, she is not going anywhere. She loves God ooo as she prays all the time. Why would she pray, I don't want her to pray, pray for what?" the demon quizzed as she twisted and turned haphazardly.

In front of a packed church, the spirit noted that "Camilla wanted to become a woman of God to go and preach at festivals. Yes, but who will give her that power? She cannot, I have made sure she will not do it, she will not preach."

"Each time she prays, they give her blessings, the following day she will sleep, she wakes up and the blessing is gone. She will grow hot and cold in her prayer. I do it, I don't want her to excel, I don't want her to be anywhere. I am her mother. Her grandmother wanted to take care of her but she refused," the demon recounted.

Asked what her mission was in the life of the actress, the unknown spirit disclosed that she wanted to "destroy her because she has refused to worship me. She is always praying. She is a very serious prayer worrier, but I always make sure she does not get there."

"That thing [acting] you see she does on air, it's all fake. I always make sure she does not get there," the demon stressed and confessed that, "I have destroyed everything for her."

In spite of her torments, the demon underscored the fact that "she is a very great actress. No one can match her when she is on stage but I have destroyed all that. I don't want her to go up because she refused to worship me."

"I destroyed everything; finance, home, family, marriage, everything. I destroyed all. She has a gift, but I destroyed it," the spirit confessed.

The demon was then cast out of her after that intriguing expose.

Camilla Mberekpe is one of Nollywood's finest actors and she has starred in several productions including, Holy Anger, Sins Of the Heart, Beloved, John Bull and Rosekate, and Evil Woman.

Microsoft wants protection of intellectual property rights in Nigeria

Microsoft also plans to train 100,000 Nigerians.
Microsoft West Africa on Friday promised to train 100,000 people and provide at least 75 per cent of them with jobs.
The Microsoft Small and Medium Solutions & Partner Director, Adefolu Majekodunmi, said this at a press briefing in Lagos held to commemorate the World Intellectual Property Day.
"We plan to train 100,000 people in ICT, with a focus on creativity and innovation, with the aim of providing at least 75 per cent of the trainee with jobs.
"We are partnering companies like Huawei to provide pocket-friendly smart devices with Nigerian content, developed by Nigerians.
"To have a favourable outcome of the training, a more enabling environment is needed for intellectual property rights. Without that, we cannot monetise ICT innovations," he said.
Mr. Majekodunmi said the Ministry of Communications and Technology had recently established a $15 million IT Innovation fund, solely focused on ICT.
"Other relevant agencies should take a cue from the Ministry in providing an enabling environment for the development of creativity, innovation and protection of intellectual property rights.
"A good legal framework and proper enforcement is what is needed to create the enabling environment needed for the development of creativity and innovation," he said.
Lanre Dabiri, a Nigerian artist– popularly known as Eldee– said if the scourge of intellectual property rights abuse was not arrested; it would ruin the development of creativity and innovation.
"I have over 400 songs catalogued and in the music industry for 15 years. I have not made up to N1 million in royalties due to lack of intellectual property rights law.
"If an enabling environment that protects and develops intellectual property is established in Nigeria, revenue will be generated for the government and individuals, and jobs will be created," he said.
Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, the Managing Director, CMC Connect, said intellectual property rights' awareness should be included in civic education to enlighten the public on its existence.
Gozie Ohumouwi, Anti-Piracy Manager, Multichoice Nigeria, said there was an urgent need to reform the copyright law to protect intellectual property.
"Intellectual property rights needs to be enforced to protect creativity and innovation," he said.

Polytechnic Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP had on Sunday, declared and commenced nationwide indefinite strike, following the failure of the Federal and State governments to implement agreements on issues affecting polytechnic education in the country, despite their seven-day warning strike which ended weekend.

According to the National President of ASUP, Mr Chibuzor Asomugha, on Sunday, he noted that the indefinite strike had become inevitable, because the meeting the union had with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, on the issues yielded no positive results.

He emphasised that the strike would be called off only when the various governments addressed all issues raised by the Union, urging all polytechnics across the country to abide by the directives to embark on strike.

DailyPost gathered that some of the issues in contention were non-migration
of members at the lower cadres on CONTISS 15 salary scale; release of white paper on the visitation panel to Federal Polytechnics; non-commencement of needs assessment of Nigerian polytechnics; worrisome state of state-owned polytechnics/monotechnics; and continued appointment of unqualified persons as Rectors by some state governments.

Others include failure of most state governments to implement approved salary packages (CONPCASS) for polytechnics and the 65 years retirement age issue; continued recognition of the NBTE as a regulatory body for Nigerian polytechnics against the creation of a National Polytechnics Commission; and the snail speed associated with the amendment of the Federal Polytechnics Act, amongst others.

ETISALAT, ABU ZARIA AND A WHOLE LOT OF HULLABALOO

As I’m writing, I’m still not sure what to name this post. I’m sure y’all got back from the break to meet a splash of green and black everywhere. You must be living under a rock or probably in Shika (‘cause Kongites were aptly represented) not to have noticed the presence of the telecommunication company, Etisalat in our illustrious school. Sincerely, I don’t mean to sound like a broken record with all my criticism and all, but one of us has to be the voice of reason on this campus. We may be all excitedly chattering away and singing praises for Etisalat for the Kia Picanto they gave away, but all is said and done, and the hullabaloo has died down, let us sit down and critically examine in our minds the whole show that Etisalat put on for us.

Okay, a lot of you will probably disagree with me on this first one but I’m gonna come out and say it. The empowerment seminar with Niyi Adesanya was not all it was hyped to be. This is probably because I’m not easily impressed having grown up in a world of books written by renowned authors. Fine! The guy is charismatic and knows how to work a crowd, my God! He had even me up and cheering the whole ‘I have a dream’, ‘I am a champion’, etc., but when I sat down, I asked my neighbor if he could list five new things he’d learnt from Mr. Adesanya’s talk that he could apply to his life to be successful and what not, and he came up blank. Oh, not to lie, I picked up my own lessons from the stories he told, only that he never pointed them out as the points he wanted us to grasp (no pun intended). Though, some people learnt what they learnt… Maybe I’m the one with the problem (I wish!). Still on the seminar, the engineer that came out to share his success story was just a joke. All he told us was that he finished school, got a job with Water Board, Kano, then with Shell Nigeria, and then ventured into some failed attempts at politics. What is the lesson here please? That we should look for good jobs when we graduate? Oh well, at least I enjoyed the comedians. *shrug*

As for the prizes given, why in God’s name will Etisalat give out only twelve or thirteen items (these are the ones up for grabs in the draws and not the whole footballers’ own) in a school as populated as Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. When I heard the whole noise and read the posters, I expected about 50 items, AT LEAST. They gave out only two blackberries and two laptops, then about eight Nokias, then an Andriod or two (not 100% sure of my figures, so make una no quote me anywhere o), and the car. You may want to still get impressed, but look at these calculations. Imagine a thousand students buying the raffle tickets at N200 a piece, that’s N200, 000. That has already bought all the miserable Nokias and the two Blackberries in fact. Think 2000 students and the figure doubles. This has in fact covered the expenses they incurred on all of the gifts, save the Picanto. And I can bet you from the tickets I saw that nothing less than 8000 tickets (GIVE or take some thousands) were sold.

So you can indeed see that Etisalat really didn’t impress as you were probably thinking. They probably even made a profit. And trust our rumor carriers for ABU, Zaria, tongues are wagging. No be me go tell you wetin them dey talk, before I enter bege (trouble) with some Ogas at the Top. Before signing out, in case you were wondering who won the car, it was a 200 level electrical engineering student, also a member of Fellowship of Christian Students (na God do am *hehehehe*). Still, Kudos to the Students Representative Council for such a fun two weeks in an otherwise dreary Ahmadu Bello University. I remain your voice of reason and social critique, @Osilama24.

‘Gay Black Men’ Are Responsible For HIV Increase – New York News

The gay/anti-gay discussion continues as a new generation of young Brooklyn Black males come under scrutiny. Although, gay relationship are becoming widely acceptable throughout the world, questions are still raised daily over it's social and health implications.

The New York Daily News published a report discussing the rise of HIV cases among men under 30 who sleep with men. "We are seeing more young men," Dr. Yusef Afacan, director of the AIDS Center Program at Woodull Medical Center in East Williamsburg said.

Doctors are worried that the young men, many hiding their sexual identity, are fueling the borough's HIV epidemic. Afacan said he has even treated boys as young as 14 who contracted HIV after sleeping with another male. "We never saw that a decade ago," Afacan said. "Young gay men are not using protection."

Doctors believe these men are infecting their Black female partners, who made up 79% of all new HIV cases among Brooklyn women in 2011. This is an alarming trend and advocates are zeroing in on central Brooklyn areas Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Williamsburg, Bushwick and East Flatbush, which are home to the city's largest group of those living with the disease.

More than 15,000 reside in central Brooklyn, where about 3,600 identify as MSMs. Those 15,000 make up 10% of the citywide HIV/AIDS cases. The Brooklyn AIDS Task Force opened a small store-front office called Brooklyn Men Konnect on Utica Ave. in Crown Heights, which reputedly has some strong anti-gay attitudes.

With federal aid dropped from $2 million a year to $350,000-we're hoping that you all take it upon yourselves to stay strapped (protected with a prophylactic), practice celibacy, or put your effort in meditation. Casual sex isn't worth losing your life.

Plot By APGA To Expel Governor Okorocha Thickens

Members of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, are currently intensifying moves to expel the embattled Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, for alleged anti-party activities.

Okorocha will be the first Governor to be expelled in the current Republic, if the plot by his party sails through.

It would be recalled that ex-governors Abubakar Rimi of Kano State and Balarabe Musa of Kaduna State were expelled under the platform of Peoples Redemption Party in the Second Republic.

DailyPost has gathered that members of the National Working Committee of APGA are making serious moves to oust Okorocha from the party.

Factions of APGA, led by Mr. Victor Umeh and Mazi Okwu have disowned Okorocha for joining the APC as clearly displayed in the last CAN party convention.

The source, who would not want his name mentioned disclosed that, "Rochas has left APGA and that is why he can't get re-election. His romance with APC amounts to anti-party activities. When we put things right, we can talk of punishment for errant members. But I can tell you that Rochas will be expelled from APGA."

APGA faction leader, Okwu stated that although attending conventions is not an offence, since it brings about cross-pollination of political ideas, Okorocha had however been attacking the APGA which produced him as Governor.

He said, "His (Okorocha's) body language and movement show he is with APC. Attending the Action Congress of Nigeria convention, is not bad, because during convention, about eight political parties attended as guests. I have attended the convention of other parties as well.

"But if he is now bad-mouthing his party because of his relationship with an association that is unregistered, we can only keep our fingers crossed, hoping that if and whenever the APC is registered, we will know what to do. For now, the APC is still seen as an association and not a political party."

Asked if it was possible to expel a sitting governor, Okwu said, Rimi and Musa were expelled from the PRP.

"If a Governor dumps the party on which he was elected, it is an issue that has to take care of itself. But let us wait; it may be possible that at the end of the day, he (Okorocha) may have a rethink. So, let's not say much on that issue yet," he said.

Lebanese Man Murdered By Lagos Robbers

A Lebanese man, Adel Jamil Bejjani (pictured above) was beaten to death yesterday Saturday April 27th at his home in Nigeria by unidentified men during a robbery operation.

Baga Massacre: Survivors Tell Their Stories

Baga, a town in northern Borno State on the Nigerian border with Chad Republic, is famous for its economic potentials in trading in stock fishes, which are produced, processed and transported to places both within and outside the country. But last week, the town made news headlines as a result of the massacre of about 200 people following a clash between soldiers attached to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and Boko Haram insurgents.

The mayhem turned the place into a ghost town after the residents fled to find shelter in neighbouring communities. Weekly Trust visited the community on Wednesday and Thursday and observed that the people of the community are yet to recover from the shock. It was learnt that one of the reasons why the massacre took time before it was known to the public was that the town had been cut off from the rest of the country after telecommunication masts in the area were burnt down by suspected Boko Haram members.
Weekly Trust gathered that since last year when the onslaught on telecommunication masts began in the town, the community had problems communicating with other parts of the world through mobile phones. Many, Weekly Trust was told by residents, devised a means of going to neighboring Bakaka Goni to make calls.
In some cases the residents have to climb trees before they can get network access to make calls.
A motorcycle rider in the town, Modu Mahmuda, said most times, he takes people on his bike to Monguno to make calls and when they are through, he takes them back to the community.
Some residents lamented that it was due to lack of communication means with other parts of the country that made it difficult for the message to reach out.
"It almost went unnoticed but for providence that made the atrocities known days after it happened," a community member stated.
When it actually began
Contrary to media reports that the incident began at the weekend, sources in the town said it took place on a Tuesday and lasted till the weekend.
Malam Bukar Maina, a resident of the area, said they were in their houses when they heard gunshot sounds which lasted for five minutes.
He said speculations went around the community that a soldier was killed by unknown gunmen at around 8:30 pm
"After an hour, we continued to hear more gunshots that lasted till 4:30am and by this time they had started burning people's houses uptill the following day," he alleged.
Another resident alleged that soldiers have been looking for an opportunity to deal with members of the town because they believed they were harboring members of the sect in an area called 'Bayan Hospital'.
"I wonder why they should punish many people of the community for the sins of one or two persons," the middle aged man said.
Some victims of the mayhem told Weekly Trust that they will never forget in a hurry the trauma they experienced when their village was invaded by soldiers. The Joint Military Task Force however denied all the allegations, insisting that the number of casualties has been exaggerated.
Many still missing
A 27-year-old man called Bukar, said his brother, the man's two wives and three children have been missing since the battle erupted last week Tuesday.
He alleged that his brother's house, including all his property, were completely burnt in a fire set by the soldiers.
"Since the incident, we have searched for the family members to no avail. We searched the burnt house for their remains, but did not see any and we are afraid that something bad might have happened to them," Bukar said.
While recalling how the incident happened, he said they were at home at around 8:30pm Tuesday last week, when the sound of gunshots was heard.
"Before we knew what was happening, some houses were on fire including that of my neighbor and I ran to a nearby village but later returned on the day the governor visited our community and found that my own house was also burnt," he added.
A resident, Mohammed, appealed to the state government to fulfill their promise of rebuilding burnt homes in the town.
Thirty year old Aishatu Sani Bagobiri and mother of seven, said her husband Sani Bagobiri is still missing since the crisis erupted.
The woman and her children were among those evacuated to a refugee camp, which is about 10 kilometers away from Baga town, by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency.
"It was just like a dream that night as we were all asleep when we heard gunshots and before we knew what was happening, our house was on fire and we ran out for safety. Since then I have not seen my husband and pray nothing happens to him," she said.
Aishatu lamented their present condition in a refugee camp and said it was a Good Samaritan who gave clothes to her children and herself to wear as they lost everything in the inferno that consumed their house.
Twenty years old Maimuna Mohammed, whose marriage was to take place in less than a few weeks' time, said the fire that ravaged her house consumed all she bought for the wedding, but did not kill anybody.
"In our house, they did not kill anybody but all the materials I bought for my wedding went with the fire that engulfed our house," she said.
A middle-aged woman, who simply identified herself as Mama Musa, narrated how soldiers allegedly set her house on fire.
"They came in the night, set fire on property we have worked for over the years. My son's three brand new motorcycles which he wanted to sell were also burnt," she said.
Goni Muhammed, a middle-aged man, also lamented that all what he worked for all his life vanished within a twinkle of the eye.
"The military just came in one night and destroyed all what I worked for and we are appealing to the state government to come to our aid," he said.
A victim, who expressed luck to be alive, said three persons in his area, namely Auwalu Chairman, a tailor, his pregnant wife Bube and four- year-old daughter were burnt to death.

Controversy over casualty figures
Since the news about the incident broke out, there have been conflicting reports on the exact number of people killed and houses destroyed. While residents of the community maintained that about 185 people were buried and others still missing, the presidency and the military headquarters put the figure at less than 30.
The Red Cross, through its Director Special Duties, Umaru Adam Mairiga, also told the BBC Hausa Service that about 2,000 houses had been burnt down in Baga, but did not say who was responsible.
Most residents still maintain that the casualty figures are even more than 185 people as many residents are still missing.
When the state's Governor, Kashim Shettima, visited the area last Sunday, residents informed him that they buried at least 185 bodies.
The figure quoted was dismissed by the Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) established by Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger to maintain security at the border areas, Brig-Gen. Austin Edokpaye, who told the governor that insurgents used heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades while attacking soldiers in the area.
"We lost an officer during an attack on our men on patrol and received intelligence reports that some suspected Boko Haram members usually pray and hide arms at a particular mosque in town. It was around that mosque that our men were attacked with several of them sustaining injuries, while an officer died," he said.

The military commander said when the soldiers reinforced and returned to the scene, the terrorists came out with heavy firepower, including rocket-propelled grenades, which he said caused conflagration effects.
Edokpaye was however silent on the casualty figures but later came up with a statement which was circulated to newsmen in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

In the statement the commander claimed that 30 insurgents and six civilians were killed in the violence.
The press release stated thus: "Multinational Joint Task Force troops on routine patrol at Baga-Mallam Garati road had an encounter with Boko Haram terrorists at about 7:30pm on Tuesday, 16 April, 2013. During the encounter, one soldier was killed and five soldiers were injured, while 30 Boko Haram terrorists lost their lives with five arrested. Many of the terrorists escaped with bullet wounds but unfortunately, six civilians lost their lives and 10 other civilians were injured in the crossfire.
"Contrary to media speculation that hundreds of houses were burnt down, instead, it was the explosion from the Boko Haram terrorists' rocket propelled grenade bombs, anti-aircraft guns and sophisticated IED materials that triggered fire to about 30 thatched houses in the predominately fishing community," the statement added.
Also on Wednesday, a health worker in charge of the Baga clinic, Goni Bukar Usman, told Weekly Trust that 193 people were brought to the clinic with various degrees of injuries.

According to him, 10 victims with serious burns were referred to a hospital in Maiduguri, while all the patients have been discharged, except two victims who are still receiving treatment for malaria," he added.

Relief for victims
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has since Thursday gained access to the victims and started distribution of relief materials to them.
Officials of the agency and Nigeria Red Cross arrived the town on Wednesday to set up camps for victims of the incident, who have started trooping in for assistance. The camp was set up in the premises of the Local Government Council's clinic at Baga town.
Materials distributed to victims include food items, mats, clothes, materials and toiletries, among others, while some victims who need medical attention are being attended to by medical officials in NEMA and the Red Cross' team.

Enema's Director of Rescue and Search Operation, Air Commodore Charles Otebegde, who led a delegation of the agency's officials from Abuja to the town, said they were following directives from President Jonathan to provide immediate reliefs to the affected victims.

Early on Wednesday, the North East Zonal Coordinator of the agency, Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, led a team of the agency's staff to some villages where some of the victims took shelter to persuade them to come to the camp for better attention. Among those presently in the camps were Aisha Sani Bagobiri, a 30 year old mother and her seven children.

Our reporter observed large relief materials, mostly food items and clothing supplied by the Borno State government at the camp.
Governor Shettima has set up a committee on the crisis and also promised to rebuild the burnt houses of the victims.

Meanwhile, the high powered delegation of senior military officers sent by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to assess the recent operation in Baga, Borno, said yesterday that there was no mass grave in the area.
Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information, who is part of the seven-member delegation, announced this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview.

Olukolade said normal life and business activities had returned to Baga, following the routing out of the Boko Haram terrorists from their base by the Multi-National Task Force.
Olukolade said among other things, the team found that there was no mass grave in Baga as it has been alleged.

The Defence Headquarters sent the delegation led by Maj.-Gen. Lawrence Ngubani, the Chief of Training and Operations, to assess the Baga operation.
