What is Missing From the Bride Price App?

Whether you take it seriously, or you simply just appreciate the satiric nature of the app, nothing takes away from it the fact that it has been a successful one from the creators at Nigerian digital agency, Anakle whose Brideprice app has gone viral over the last couple of days. The success of it might be owing to the 'marriage stereotypes' among Nigerians which is a constant source of humour for a youthful population who always finds a way to make a joke about everything. Its just the Nigerian way, no one takes life too serious around here. Also, marriage is a constant source of discussion, especially on social media. What with the weekly trending relationship talk show on Twitter 'No Holds Barred Interactive' #NHBi, and the seeming frequent announcement of marriage engagement of couples who met on Twitter.
The app measures the 'worth' of females by taking into account height, skin colour, body size, country of residence, accent, educational qualification, employment status, cooking skills, beauty and facial features, and nationality. Points are measured in Nigerian naira. The humour is evident in scale and judging criteria for points. For cooking skills the highest level is Calabar, a testimony to the culinary excellence of the women of the South-South region of Akwa Ibom and Cross River, the lowest being 'Boiling egg' which deducts N40,000 from your Bride price money. And there is 'Maga dependent' on the employment scale which deducts N10,000 as well. Apparently, Nigerian men aren't big on their women having PhD's. Having one sets you back by fifty grand. A Masters degree is ok and adds N100,000 to your price money. So you reside in Nigeria? No points on that one for you dear. The biggest winners are those resident in America who get N100,000 more added to their worth. Hollywood's influence and the reselling of the black skin to us is apparent in the scale of skin color with

We are not ashamed to be called the church of the rich – Oyedepo

Founder, Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, in this interview with Olabisi Deji-Folutile, GBENRO ADEOYE and TUNDE AJAJA, talks about the church and sundry issues

You preach as if you have committed the entire Bible to your memory. How many times have you read the Bible?

The Bible is an unfinishable book, you keep reading. A student once met me after a meeting and said that I quoted 68 scriptures verbatim. He asked if I memorised the scriptures, I said no, I eat them. No matter how unintelligent you are, you can’t forget the food you ate last night, except you are mentally derailed. If you are given three seconds, you could tell what you ate about five days ago, if you truly ate it. So, the Bible is just not for reading, it’s actually for eating. I’m not among the people that have read the Bible three or five times, I don’t know how many times I have read the Bible and I’m not planning to know how many times. I just know it’s my delight to feed on it daily, and I can’t claim to have finished reading it.

The Living Faith church is 33 years old, how has it been pastoring this one church for the past years?

The ministry is 33 years, the church is now in its 31st year. It started as an itinerant ministry before we were called into the church ministry. It has always been interesting. These things work when you have the right perspective on them. Every pastor is ordained to serve the congregation, not to be served by the congregation. When that understanding dawns on any pastor, and he embraces it, then, pasturing becomes a sweet adventure. I’ve never looked towards what I can get from any member since inception. But I’ve always longed for what I can give to the people. I must say I’m jealous over them, I don’t want anyone to take advantage of them or play games on them. I want them to just be the children of God that they are, serving God without duress or pressure.

Is it true that church members here pray for the dead and they wake up, even in the mortuary, how do they do it?

(Cuts in..) By tapping them and saying wake up (laughs). We must know the source of everything that we experienced or observed. No man has the power to raise the dead. Jesus is the only one that has the keys of resurrection and death in his hands. So, we rely on him to do those things and he quickens whosoever he wills; he determines who to bring back and who not to. We only believe in God to bring back whosoever he wishes, if we have the key, we would be delighted to bring back everybody, and even open a clinic for bringing back the dead.

Why are there so many rich people in Winners?

WHEN WILL THEY STOP DECEIVING US THAT WE ARE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW?

Few days ago, I saw some children playing, they were having real fun singing songs they were taught in their schools. One of the greatest songs they sang which obviously everyone sang as a child was:

"Pa-rents, listen to your children
We are the leaders of tomorrow
Try to pay our school fees
And give us sound education."

Initially, I was enjoying their gathering as I really love to watch kids play not until they started singing the above song so passionately with all of their might....We all know how kids sing a song they really love....they sing on top of their voices, jumping and dancing like the way Arsenal fans danced when they won the FA cup (Up Gunners).

Anyway, these kids were simply happy calling themselves the 'leaders of tomorrow'. And I felt pity for them, for they knew not what they were singing.

Many of us sang this song when we were young, either to make our parents pay our school fees or just for

Fuel Scarcity Looms in Lagos

Lagos residents may experience fuel scarcity from this week as the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has instructed tanker drivers in Lagos zone to stop loading from Tuesday and Wednesday.

The union's National Chairman, Comrades S. A. Oladiti and National Secretary, Sunday Ochibejivwie, in a statement, stated its members may embark on strike in Lagos from this week.

The strike, they explained, is to protest the unwarranted killing of one of their members, Comrade Olalekan Lawal, by men of Operation Mesa in Lagos last April.

The union said, failure of the constituted authority to heed to its demands and request for compensation, unabated excesses of military men at check points and demands for samples of products by security operatives from ten to twenty litres at various points are parts of its grouse.

New domestic airline to cut airfares

A new entrant to the crisis-ridden domestic airline industry, Azman Airlines, on Thursday commenced operations with a promise to cut airfares in order make air travel affordable to many.

The airline said it was beginning air services with two United States-made Boeing 737 planes while two additional planes would join the fleet in a couple of weeks.

It added that it received the mandatory Air Operator Certificate from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority last week after rigorous safety procedure and tests.

The statement by the airline quoted the Managing Director, Dr. Faisal Abdulmunaf, as saying that the airline would be commencing flights on the Lagos-Abuja, Lagos-Kano, Abuja-Kano, Kaduna-Lagos, Lagos-Maiduguri and Lagos-Port Harcourt routes.

He said the management of the carrier was investing huge amounts of money in the region to expand its operations by developing new routes and services in favour of the average passenger.

Abdulmunaf said many Nigerians wanted to travel by air but could not do so due to the relatively high cost of air travel, promising that its fares would be competitive to match the type of service its going to provide.

He reiterated that the carrier went through stringent demonstration flight after it was issued with a licence, adding that the airline would ensure that it serves passengers efficiently.

The statement also quoted the Chairman, Azman Airlines, Dr. Abdulmunaf Yunusa Sarina, as saying that the vision for establishing the business was to establish a highly diversified business conglomerate that provide goods and services that would enhance the development of the economy.

The former Assistant General Secretary of Airline Operators of Nigeria, Alhaji Mohammed Tukur, was quoted by the statement as commending the coming of Azman, noting that increase in the number of airlines would lead to better services and lower fares.

Gays find courage to come out in Kinshasa

Free of the harsh anti-gay laws found in much of Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo may seem a haven for same-sex couples, but it still takes courage to come out in Kinshasa.
Dida, a hairdresser in the capital, said he had no qualms being openly gay — although he, like others, asked for his name to be changed for the interview.
"My own parents accepted me as I am and as for others, I don't give a damn what they think," he told AFP, confidently.
But Arthur, a basketball player in his 30s, struggles with the social stigma in a country where many see homosexuality as sinful, or unnatural.
"I'm afraid of what my family will say, my friends, others around me. I don't feel at ease with myself."
Far from outlawing homosexuality like Uganda, where draconian legislation has sparked a global outcry, the Kinshasa government has included measures to help AIDS prevention for the gay community.
But as the country marks the International Day against Homophobia on Saturday, Congolese NGOs say gays still face being cast out by their families, or forced into prostitution to survive.
Gays and lesbians face "verbal and moral violence and isolated cases of blackmail as well as threats", which

Why Jonathan's Trip to Chibok was Cancelled

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday was bashed for cancelling his planned trip to Chibok, where over 200 girls were abducted on April 14, because of the dicey security situation in Borno State.
The Northern Elders 'Forum and leading legal activists in the country have criticised the President for cancelling the visit, saying the development was 'completely embarrassing' as it portrayed Jonathan as a 'push around' leader.
It was gathered on Friday that while the President was bent on making the journey, his security managers believed it was not safe to do so following the widespread publicity given to the visit.
It was learnt that senior officials of the nation's security outfits persuaded the President to shun the planned visit.
A security source said the mutiny by some soldiers of the 101 Battalion, who attacked the General Officer Commanding, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Mohammed on Tuesday also heightened fears ahead of the visit.
The source said it would be ridiculous for the security handlers to expose the President without first addressing any issue of suspected disenchantment among troops in the area.

Nigerian Man Arrested at MMIA for Attempted Drug Smuggling

Odeyemi Adedeji Bella Naija
A 51-year-old Nigerian man who was allegedly attempting to smuggle 3.870kg of suspected Methamphetamine to Nairobi, Kenya, was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport by the NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency).
The suspect, Odeyemi Ademola Ayodeji, was arrested during outward security screening of passengers on a Kenyan Airways flight, Vanguard reports.
The drug was reportedly found in Ayodeji’s luggage, wrapped in a white transparent polythene bag, which  also contained food ingredients like pepper, crayfish, and melon.
During investigations, Ayodeji reportedly revealed that he had attempted to smuggle the drugs due to financial hardship.
“I am owing people. I couldn’t sleep because of debts.  I have two wives. But the first one left to live with her parents because of  my condition.
I would have made a profit of $15,000 (N2.4 million)  had I succeeded in selling the drug in Nairobi. I intended paying my debts and start a business with the  money realised,” he said.

Pistorius sent for psychiatric tests over claims he is 'hyper vigilant' – meaning he could escape murder charge

The judge at the Oscar Pistorius trial has ruled that the double-amputee will be sent for psychiatric evaluation after an expert said that he suffered from an anxiety disorder that gave him 'hyper-vigilance'.

Psychiatrist Dr Merryll Vorster, for the defence, said that Pistorius' condition is linked to his disability and meant that he was prone to fight, rather than take flight, in the presence of perceived danger.

If Pistorius' condition is found to have played a role in the fatal shooting of Reeva Steenkamp in his home on February 14, 2013, then he may escape a murder charge. Continue...

Children Threaten not to Celebrate Children's Day this Year #BringBackOurGirls

Nigerian's children's parliament has vowed not to celebrate Children's Day on May 27 if the abducted Chibok schoolgirls were not released before then.

The parliament's National speaker, Master Idara Thompson made the disclosure yesterday at the end of the 2014 national and state Children's parliament retreat in Uyo.

"The leaders instead of deploying security operatives in schools, Churches, Mosques, and other public places to protect the children, they rather deploy them in the homes of politicians, their aides and riches." He said

54 School Girls Identified in Boko Haram Video

It was a day of anguish and tears yesterday when parents of the kidnapped schoolgirls and their classmates converged on the Government House, Maiduguri, Borno State, to identify the girls who were shown in a video released by Boko Haram on Monday.
The exercise which was painstaking and lasted throughout the day and last night, however, yielded some results, as parents, girls from Chibok secondary school and Borno State Government officials, were able to identify 54 of the abducted girls who featured in the video.
Shortly after the terror sect released the video, the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, had directed that it should be reproduced and distributed so that the parents of the girls could identify their daughters.
But for other parents who could not identify their daughters, the pain and sorrow continued, with speculation rising that some of the girls who appeared in the video may have been kidnapped before April 14 from other communities in Borno.
The leader of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, had released a video on Monday showing over a hundred of the kidnapped girls who are believed to have been abducted from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, a month ago.
He had said that the girls, all dressed in the Muslim hijab and reciting verses of the Qu'ran, would only be released if the federal government accepts to exchange them for members of his sect who have been in government detention facilities for years.

Brain Behind Nyanya Bombing Arrested in Sudan

Indications have emerged that the co-mastermind of the April 14, 2014 bomb blast at Nyanya Bust Station which led to the death of over 75 persons Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche has been arrested in Sudan.
Security sources say that Oguche was arrested through the help of the Military Attaché to the Nigerian High Commission in Sudan with the help of international security operatives.  Ogwuche, who is a student of Arabic Language at the International University of Africa, Sudan is a British born Nigerian, formerly of the Nigerian Army with service number SVC 95/104 but was said to have deserted the Army in 2006.
It could be recalled that the Department of State Services (DSS), had on Monday 12, May 2014 during a joint news conference in Abuja declared him and one Rufai Tsiga wanted for the bombing of Nyanya Motor Park on 14 April which killed over 75 people. The DSS through its Director of Public Relations of DSS, Marilyn Ogar, announced the declaration.
According to the Department of State Security, Ogwuche served in the Intelligence Unit of the Nigerian Army at Child Avenue, Arakan Barracks, Lagos, between 2001 and 2006. He was allegedly involved in terrorist activities which led to his arrest at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Nov. 12, 2011 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on arrival from the UK. But was however, released on

The United States has deployed manned surveillance aircraft over Nigeria and is sharing satellite imagery with the Nigerian government to find more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Islamist insurgents, a senior Obama administration official said on Monday.

"We have shared commercial satellite imagery with the Nigerians and are flying manned ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) assets over Nigeria with the government's permission," the official said.

The US has sent military, law-enforcement and development experts to Nigeria to help search for the missing girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram militants from a secondary school in Chibok in Borno state on April 14.

Some of the 276 Nigerian girls snatched from their school under cover of darkness appeared to re-emerge in a propaganda video shot by Boko Haram released on Monday.

Youths Destroy Churches, Mosques in Southern Kaduna

A church and two mosques have been destroyed by youths in Kachia town, Southern Kaduna.
A source said trouble started when a fence which was being erected around the Eid praying ground in the area was pulled down.

He said: "There is a parcel of land which the Muslims use for their Eid prayers. They decided to fence it because, according to them, people come in there to defecate.
"In the process of fencing the land, the people around claimed they have exceeded the boundary and pulled down the fence.
"Last night, the Muslim youths decided to attack the Nasara Baptist Church and burn it down. In retaliation, Christian youths burnt down the mosque at Government College, Kachia and another mosque in the area.
"The situation has been brought under control and I can confirm to you that there was no death."

The author of Half of Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Adichie, has accused Nigeria of denial in relation to the events of the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War.

"This week, Nigerian government censors delayed the release of the film adaptation of "Half of a Yellow Sun" because, according to them, it might incite violence in the country; at issue in particular is a scene based on a historically documented massacre at a northern Nigerian airport," Ms. Adichie wrote in The New Yorker, an American literary magazine.
