Colleges Of Education Lecturers Begin Nationwide Strike Today
This was made known in a letter to the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike in Abuja.
The letter, which was delivered by the General Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Mr. Nuhu Ogirima, lamented that the Federal Government had failed to address issues raised by the Union.
Govt Bans Flights From Maiduguri Airport Till Further Notice
According to a Notice to Airmen sent by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency to airline operators, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, the carriers were told that the airport would no longer be available for flights until March 2014.
In the NOTAM, which was filed through NAMA's Aeronautical Information Services, and sent to some Control Towers across the country, pilots were informed that the Maiduguri airport was shut during the first week of December and would not be available until early March next year.
Further investigations by our correspondent revealed that the Federal Government decided to shut the airport after Boko Haram insurgents destroyed some equipment belonging to NAMA.
A NAMA source at one of the airports in the North, who confirmed the development, said it was the agency's generators that were destroyed by the Boko Haram sect during the recent attack on the Maiduguri Air Force base.
He said the generators might not be fixed until next year, expressing the hope that the government would have fixed the situation before the March date when the airport was expected to be re-opened.
Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, was on December 2 attacked by Boko Haram insurgents, leading to the death of two military personnel and members of the sect, and the destruction of three decommissioned military aircraft, two helicopters and property worth millions of naira.
Owing to the siege, military authorities and the Borno State Government slammed a 24-hour curfew on the city and its environs.
The attack forced the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to shut the Maiduguri airport and airlines hurriedly cancelled their flights to the city.
Arik Air had to cancel its Abuja to Maiduguri morning flight on Monday following the attack, just as roads leading into the city were closed.
However, the FAAN spokesman, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said on Monday that the airport had been opened.
He said the Maiduguri airport was just closed for a day following the Boko Haram attack on the nearby Air Force base and had since been re-opened.
But findings revealed that the airport had yet to be reopened. Arik Air said it had yet to resume operations to the Maiduguri airport because the airport was still closed.
Early this year, domestic airlines operating flights into Kano, Maiduguri, Yola and other volatile cities the North had announced plans to stop flights into the cities due to security concerns.
The development came a few months after some of the domestic carriers cancelled night-stops for their crew and aircraft in extremely volatile northern cities, especially Maiduguri.
The security situation had forced the foreign airlines to stop night stops at the Abuja airport.

Racist Tweet Over AIDS in Africa Costs PR Director Her Job
Media company IAC has "parted ways" with the company PR executive who tweeted: "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!"
IAC spokesman Ryan Trostle said Saturday: "The offensive comment does not reflect the views and values of IAC. We take this issue very seriously, and we have parted ways with the employee in question.
"There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally," he said. "We hope, however, that time and action, and the forgiving human spirit, will not result in the wholesale condemnation of an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core."

Bayern Munich Wins Club World Cup
The Bavarian giants had few problems against Moroccan champions Raja as Bayern grabbed both goals inside the opening 22 minutes from Brazil centre-back Dante, then midfielder Thiago.
Having become the first German team to win the treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup titles last season, Bayern now add the Club World Cup to the UEFA Super Cup title they won in August.
"To dust off a title like that at the end of such a year is unbelievable," said Bayern captain Philipp Lahm. "We made life hard for ourselves on occasion and it's a pity we eased up at the end."

Confusion Over Alleged Open Letter By Iyabo Obasanjo
In the letter entitled "Open Letter to my Father", which has since gone viral online, Iyabo purportedly scathingly attacked his father.
While issuing a disclaimer that the controversial letter "is not in support of President Jonathan or APC or any other group or person, but an outpouring from my soul to God", Iyabo purportedly described his father as self-serving liar and cruel man.
The former senator's controversial letter came barely nine days after her father slammed the President also in a letter .
But this new development has since stirred a debate online as Nigerians are divided over the authenticity or otherwise of the said letter, moreso that the alleged author of the letter is said to be away abroad.
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who had initially taken to Twitter to deny the authenticity of the letter on behalf of Iyabo backtracked, stating that he was confused as to his initial claim.
He cited various "conflicting reports" as the reason for his sudden change of posture noting that the supposed letter by Iyabo should not sway Nigerians from demanding a reply from Jonathan on the sundry allegations leveled against the President as contained in Obasanjo's letter.
Fani-Kayode, a former spokesperson of ex-President Obasanjo, said there was no need to start poke-nosing into the "privately family matters" of his former boss, saying he will now rely on whatever is said personally by Iyabo.

Obasanjo's letter unbecoming, self-serving & provocative - Presidency
Obama's Speech at Mandela's Memorial: Full Transcript
It is hard to eulogize any man — to capture in words not just the facts and the dates that make a life, but the essential truth of a person — their private joys and sorrows; the quiet moments and unique qualities that illuminate someone's soul. How much harder to do so for a giant of history, who moved a nation toward justice, and in the process moved billions around the world.
Former President Obasanjo Writes President Jonathan, Accuses Him Of Lying
“Nigeria is bleeding and the hemorrhage must be stopped,” Mr. Obasanjo said in the 18-page letter dated December 2, 2013 and exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday.
He said Mr. Jonathan has failed to deliver on his promises to the Nigerian people, stem corruption, promote national unity and strengthen national security.
He said in the letter titled “Before it is too late” that rather than take steps to advance Nigeria’s interest and up the standards of living of Nigerians, Mr. Jonathan had betrayed God and the Nigerian people that brought him to power, and has been pursuing selfish personal and political interests based on advice he receives from “self-centred aides”.

Plateau State Name State University After Solomon Lar
Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang Friday, renamed the State University after the late Chief Solomon Lar, regarded as the founding father of the old Plateau state, who passed on recently in the United States of America after a brief illness.
This is as Professor Jerry Gana described Lar as the Mandela of Nigeria, and said he would be greatly missed especially his belief in unity.
The Governor made the disclosure at the General Aviation Terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while receiving the large contingent of both government officials and families members who accompanied the corpse from the U.S.
As a mark of respect, Jang declared three days mourning in the honour of the late political icon beginning from Wednesday to Friday next week. In addition, the governor equally declared 13th of March every year as public holiday in the state as a mark of honour to the late politician.
He said: "We have all gathered today to receive baba back home because of what he means to Plateau and Nasarawa states, which he governed when the two states were one. That is why Nasarawa State is participating in this burial fully, Bauchi state is also participating in this burial fully.
