SECOND national carrier, Globacom at the beacon of ICT awards last week, scooped three awards becoming the Best Telecoms Company of the Year, Most Innovative Mobile Player of the Year and Undersea Cable Company of the Year.

Organizers of the award said Globacom emerged tops in the award categories in an online poll conducted from December last year to March 30, 2014, in which over 250,000 respondents participated.
Glo was voted the Best Telecoms Company of the Year because of its revolutionary role in the industry. Organisers noted that the company had continued to ensure that Nigerians benefitted from technological advances by pioneering revolutionary products and crashing telecom service tariffs.

On the second award, the Most Innovative Mobile Player, Glo was chosen for continuing to distinguish itself as a leader in introducing innovative voice and data services in the industry. In voting Glo Undersea Cable Company of the Year, Beacon of ICT Awards organizers said respondents took into account the emergence of Glo 1 as a major bandwidth provider in the West Africa sub-region.

They noted that Glo 1 had become the first choice service provider for several companies across different sectors including telecoms, oil and gas, construction, banking and manufacturing.
The Beacon of ICT Awards was instituted to reward the vision and enterprise of individuals and companies that have contributed to the growth of the ICT industry. ... spends over $100m on network expansion
THIS is also as the operator at the weekend announced that it has almost swapped its legacy network facilities with modern equipment which would stand it far from competition in the industry.
Announcing the new development, Globacom Head of Operations, Mr Kola Osho, also hinted that the company has penned down a contract of over $100 million for network upgrade.
Osho said that to modernize operations, Globacom has fully completed swap legacy facilities in its Lagos, Abuja, Ogun and Oyo operations among others while that of Port Harcourt is 70 percent ready.
He also disclosed that in the next three months the network was going to move from the 46 percent 3G coverage of the country to 90 percent; roll out about 1,500 3G enabled new sites that will be data enabled from the start.
He also dropped a hint that the company had placed an order of about 100G backbone modernization system in preparation of an eventual fibre cut in the future, saying that all these, would not only significantly impact on the coverage of data services but also create confidence and build trust, conviction, satisfaction, loyalty, goodwill, commitment and more in Glo customers.
