Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Ahmadu Ali, on Tuesday emerged as the Chairman of the party's Board of Trustees. The election of the Chairman was keenly contested and Ali was favoured ahead of candidates like former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, Cheif Tony Anenih, who is believed to be the President's candidate, Chief Shuaibu Oyedokun and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu. The position became vacant after the former holder, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo resigned last year.
Contrary to speculations that the new Chairman might be a consensus candidate, none of the contenders stepped down, thus making it necessary to go into election. The party's Board Secretary, Walid Jibrin disclosed that the new Chairman will serve a term of five years.
Meanwhile, the emergence of Ahmadu Ali, a known Obasanjo loyalist, and the defeat of Tony Anenih who was recently appointed as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority is a confirmation that former President Obasanjo still has a hold on the party.
