Another ASUU Strike Looms

Barely two months after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), called off its nearly-six-month strike, the university system may soon be thrown into another round of crisis, which portends dire consequences, if not immediately nipped in the bud.
This is against the backdrop of the fact that the education sector is already in a near-comatose, with the current strike actions embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).
ASUU yesterday, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, alerted the nation of an alleged non-compliance by the Federal Government with the agreement signed between both parties, last December, prior to ASUU's

Three more PDP govs heading to APC

Three more governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are getting ready to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a fresh wave of defections from the PDP.

Two of the governors are from the Northwest and the third from the North central.

More Senators and Representatives are also bidding their time to cross over to the APC, highly placed sources said yesterday in Yola where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar teamed up with the APC mid week.

BAUCHI (Nigeria): The young man cried out as he was being whipped on the courtroom bench. The bailiff's leather whip struck him 20 times, and when it was over, the man's side and back were covered with bruises.
Still, the large crowd outside was disappointed, the judge recalled: the penalty for gay sex under local Islamic law is death by stoning.
"He is supposed to be killed," the judge, Nuhu Idris Mohammed, said, praising his own leniency on judgment day last month at the Shariah court here. The bailiff demonstrated the technique he used: whip at shoulder level, then forcefully down.

Three ABU Lecturers Die in Fatal Auto Crash

It was indeed a sad day for authorities of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, yesterday following the death of its three lecturers who were killed in a fatal auto crash.

The road mishap, occurred around Abuja-Kaduna Express Way, as the three professors were on their way to Zaria from Abuja.

The three lecturers are Prof. Samuel Kafewo, Dr. Martins Ayegba, and Nanaaisha Ali. All were Development Communication experts and also lecturers at ABU's Department of Theatre and Performing Arts.

Overland Aircraft Catches Fire in Abuja

A major air disaster was averted on Friday as an aircraft with Ibadan as its destination had a near blow up as one of the engines caught fire just before take off. The passengers had to run and jump out of the aircraft.

One of the passengers told Street Journal that "thick flame was up and the air hostess shouted that we should all come out. The door wouldn't open on time until the captain assisted."

The passengers first had to sit down on the grass but were later conveyed from the tarmac in a bus. In the course of the confusion, Rtd Gen Jinadu was pushed down and he fell flat. Street Journal also found out that the flight could have taken off but for a passenger who caused a delay by insisting on sighting her luggage.

Officials of Overland Air could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing the report.

Some of the passengers had to be taken to the airforce base for first aid.

Boko Haram Kills Muslim Cleric, Wife And Child In Zaria

Outlawed Islamist sect Boko Haram has been suspected of killing a Muslim cleric, Sheikh Adam Albani, his wife and child in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Albani was a staunch critic of the Islamic extremist group.
His assassination came just hours after the fatal shooting, also by members of the sect, of a Christian preacher, in Adamawa state.
