John Mikel Obi has been crowned the Nigeria Sport Man of the year Award 2012 in a colorful award ceremony that took place on November 29 at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island in Lagos.
To clinch the award, the Chelsea midfielder had to see off stiff competition from 22 other nominees shortlisted for the maiden edition of the Nigeria Sports Award.
Mikel got two nominations in two categories, which will see him vying for honours in the‘footballer of the year’ and ‘Sportsman of the year.’
Aside these two awards,15 other categories were shortlisted: team of the year, coach of the year, footballer of the year (male), footballer of the year (female), ball sports person of the year, special sports person of the year, sportsman of the year, sportswoman of the year, lifetime achievement in sports.
Other well deserving sports personalities that got nominated alongside Mikel, are Paralympic gold medallist Yakubu Adesokan, and Ike Diogu who played a pivotal role in helping Nigeria qualify for its first appearance in the Basketball event at the last summer Olympics.
Winners emerged through a voting process that involved members of the public chosing their preferred candidates via sms.
