Three-Time Winner - Glo Scoops Three At Boict Awards

SECOND national carrier, Globacom at the beacon of ICT awards last week, scooped three awards becoming the Best Telecoms Company of the Year, Most Innovative Mobile Player of the Year and Undersea Cable Company of the Year.

Organizers of the award said Globacom emerged tops in the award categories in an online poll conducted from December last year to March 30, 2014, in which over 250,000 respondents participated.
Glo was voted the Best Telecoms Company of the Year because of its revolutionary role in the industry. Organisers noted that the company had continued to ensure that Nigerians benefitted from technological advances by pioneering revolutionary products and crashing telecom service tariffs.

On the second award, the Most Innovative Mobile Player, Glo was chosen for continuing to distinguish itself as a leader in introducing innovative voice and data services in the industry. In voting Glo Undersea Cable Company of the Year, Beacon of ICT Awards organizers said respondents took into account the emergence of Glo 1 as a major bandwidth provider in the West Africa sub-region.

Hundreds reported dead in Boko Haram attack on border town

Islamic militants are reported to have killed as many as 300 people in an attack on a Nigerian border town. Boko Haram assailants are said to have gunned down civilians as they tried to escape intentionally lit fires. Gunmen in armored vehicles and riding motorcycles stormed the town of Gamboru Ngala, Borno state, late Tuesday and into the early hours of Wednesday, razing much of the area and opening fire as survivors fled.
Local newspapers and regional Senator Ahmed Zannah reported that some 300 people had been killed in the attack, staged after government soldiers were redeployed away from the town, some 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of the state capital, Maiduguri.

The woman pictured above was accused of attempting to kidnap three primary school pupils in the Ekoro area of Abule-Egba, Lagos yesterday May 6th. Eye-witnesses claim the woman stopped the kids, who were aged 7-10 years as they were going to school, and asked to take them to school.

Then a female hawker in the area, suspecting the woman was up to no good, alerted others in the area who then surrounded the woman and started asking her questions. They say the woman claimed they were her children but couldn't give their names and the direction she was taking them wasn't where their school was...plus the children said they didn't know her and before anyone could stop it, they descended on the woman. Beating her to a stupor and then setting her ablaze.

Some of my relatives lived for decades in the North, in Kano and Bornu. They spoke fluent Hausa. (One relative taught me, at the age of eight, to count in Hausa.) They made planned visits to Anambra only a few times a year, at Christmas and to attend weddings and funerals. But sometimes, in the wake of violence, they made unplanned visits. I remember the word 'Maitatsine' – to my young ears, it had a striking lyricism – and I remember the influx of relatives who had packed a few bags and fled the killings. What struck me about those hasty returns to the East was that my relatives always went back to the North. Until two years ago when my uncle packed up his life of thirty years in Maiduguri and moved to Awka. He was not going back. This time, he felt, was different.

Fight over boy led girl to kill another girl, 14

A 14-year-old girl shot and killed another 14-year-old girl because of an argument over a boy, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said today as murder charges were filed.

The .38-caliber handgun used to kill Endia Martin Monday afternoon had been stolen from a car on April 13 and was brought to the scene by someone who knew the suspect and knew "there was going to be a fight," McCarthy said.

"What would have been, under any other circumstance, probably a fistfight between 14-year-old girls, because they were fighting over a boy, turned into a murder," McCarthy told reporters. "You introduce a firearm and you have a murder."

The suspect has been charged as a juvenile with murder, and her 24-year-old uncle and a 17-year-old boy are also facing charges.

"It appears that the two individuals we have in custody brought the gun to the scene – may have brought the gun to the scene – and were trying to discard the gun afterwards," McCarthy said.

The superintendent took the opportunity to yet again criticize Illinois gun laws. He noted that the gun used in the slaying was legally owned and legally stored in a car when it was stolen.

"There was a legal gun that became an illegal gun," he said, saying state law should be changed to require guns to be kept more securely.

Boko Haram Bombs Church, Kills 8 in Fresh Attack in Kubla

No fewer than eight people were killed in a gun attack by suspected members of the Islamist insurgents, Boko Haram, in Kubla Village of Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where they set places of worship and residential houses ablaze during their raid.

Some residents of the affected village, who fled the area, said they were attacked by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members in the early hours of yesterday.

"They used explosives during the attack on the churches and many people lost their lives," villagers recounted, as one of the residents, who identified himself as Heldia Apogu, said, "I cannot actually say how many people were kill but I saw about six dead bodies being evacuated."

Another resident claimed that some houses were also attacked by the gunmen who took some men as hostages.

Bey and Jay Z Announce Joint Tour: On the Run

Ezekwesili Attacks Diezani Over N10bn Scandal

Former World Bank Vice President, Dr Oby Ezekwesili is calling Petroleum Minister, Diezani Madueke out by faulting her move to stop the investigation on her alleged spending of N10bn to chatter private jets for two years.

"Shameful Judge will grant will grant the petroleum minister such a Shameful request" Oby tweeted

Adding that the blame should go to the Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government for "permitting" a minister to avoid public accountability.

She said, "There is so much that is wrong with our world today that can make the most incurable optimist become jaded. A Federal High Court in Abuja is to hear a suit filed by the petroleum minister seeking to stop the House of Representatives from probing her.

"Asking court to restrain the probe of the minister's alleged involvement in spending N10bn to maintain chartered planes; when does this end? Did the President know his minister made such a disgraceful request?

Man Who Exposed Delta State fraud Handed Over To Delta State Government

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, Ambrose Ezewani, an ex student of the University of Lagos and former President of the National Association of Delta State students, UNILAG chapter, who blew the lid on a systematic student bursary racketing allegedly spearheaded by the Commissioner for Higher Education in Delta state, Mr Hope Eghagha has been handed over to the Delta state Government.
Ezeanwani was President of the National Association of Delta State Students Union at the University of Lagos. During his tenure, he revealed that the bursary system was fraught with fraud, which he said was being perpetrated by men in the scholarship board in Delta State.Ezeawani alleged that the irregularities surfaced since the current Commissioner for Higher Education in the State, Mr. Hope Eghagha came on board. Mr. Eghagha a former professor at the University of lagos was a former newspaper columnist and critic of the Delta state government before bagging a government appointment a few years ago.Ezeawani claims that  Eghagha's office had created a system for students bursary application where non-existing students are awarded bursary by the state.He said in his investigation, which the UNILAG students' records office corroborated, the names published as "approved" for bursary awards every year where non-existent in the Institution's official records.

Jonathan Sacks Gulak, Political Adviser

President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday  terminated the appointment of his Special Adviser (Political), Alhaji Ahmed  Gulak, with immediate effect.
A terse statement issued by Jonathan's Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Dr. Reuben Abati, announced Gulak's removal from office.The president thanked  Gulak for his services to his administration and wished him success in his future endeavours.
According to the statement, a replacement for Gulak will be announced later.Although no reason was given for the sudden sack of Gulak, THISDAY learnt that his removal may be due to the face-off between him and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.The former political adviser, according to findings, had recently single handedly inaugurated a group championing the re-election of Jonathan in Akwa Ibom State without the input of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as well as the governor.The action of Gulak was seen by Akpabio and the state chapter of the party  as an attempt to cause division within the party's fold ahead of the 2015 elections.

Ongoing protest at the federal secretariat in Abuja disrupted by police with tear-gas and water aimed at protesters – lecturers of Nigeria’s universities.
The police is using tear-gas and water to stop the protest that is right now going on at the building of Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

Lecturers and students of Nigeria’s polytechnics and other colleges have gathered to show their discontent with the federal government in the way it’s handling the strike by the ASUP lecturers and COEASU lecturers. The representatives of both unions have been on strike since the last year, and hundreds of thousands of students have not been able to attend lectures since then.

Alison-Madueke gets court injunction stopping reps from probing N10b jet scandal

Minister of Petroleum, Dieziani Alison-Madueke, who has been in the middle of a 10bn jet scandal has secured a court injunction stopping the House of Representatives from further investigating her, Premium Times reports. Alison-Madueke had approached a federal high court in Abuja where she asked the court to restrain the House members to discontinue any probe involving her.

Justice . R. Mohammed who presided over the case, barred the house members or their committees  from summoning her for any further investigations or even ordering her arrest if she failed to appear before the house. According to reports, the court injuction was secured on April 14th but was only made public today as the House intended to commence further investigation on the matter today.

Speaking on the court injunction, the Chairman of the House Public Accounts Committee, Solomon Olamilekan said they were surprised by the court injunction.
