Chinese Embassy in Nigeria denies students visa on grounds of Ebola #NGIsEbolaFree

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has denied visas to students of Ekiti State University citing Ebola as the reason despite the World Health Organization declaring Nigeria an Ebola free country.
The students were invited to participate in ENACTUS 2014 (Entrepreneurial Action Us), an international competition of young entrepreneurs involving 36 countries slated for 22 – 24th of October 2014 in China in which Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Egypt are to represent Africa. But the Chinese Embassy here refused to grant the student visas to go to China.

Amosun shuts down OOU over students’ protest

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun on Saturday ordered the closer of the state-owned university, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, following continued students' protest over school fees.

According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, government took the decision to forestall violence.

The statement added that the government is aware of another protest being planned by the students, which could also lead to violence, hence the need to close the school.

The state government had announced earlier the reduction of the tuition fee which should be implemented

Police Use Tear-Gas On Protesting Students, Lecturers, ASUP

 

Ongoing protest at the federal secretariat in Abuja disrupted by police with tear-gas and water aimed at protesters – lecturers of Nigeria’s universities.
The police is using tear-gas and water to stop the protest that is right now going on at the building of Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

Lecturers and students of Nigeria’s polytechnics and other colleges have gathered to show their discontent with the federal government in the way it’s handling the strike by the ASUP lecturers and COEASU lecturers. The representatives of both unions have been on strike since the last year, and hundreds of thousands of students have not been able to attend lectures since then.

NECO releases November/December 2013 examination results

National Examination Council (NECO) on Friday released the 2013 November/December examination results.

The Registrar, Prof. Promise Okpalla, who made the announcement in Minna, said that out of 51,759 who sat for the examination, 31, 201 candidates scored credits in Mathematics, while 28,113 candidates, representing 48.7 per cent of the candidates scored credit in English Language.

He said that Zamfara recorded the highest cases of malpractice in the examination, with 6.14 per cent and was followed by Imo with 5.28 per cent.

LASU Fees Finally Reduced by Fashola

A protracted crisis at the Lagos State University over fee hikes that have outraged students and their parents and also led to protests has reached resolution point with Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State now proposing a reduction of the tuition to accommodate everybody.

Fashola made the proposal during a meeting with the protesting students. The students, under the auspices of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), are demanding reversal of the hiked fee. They have staged several rallies and protests to press their case.

Edo Teachers Shun Competency Test – PREMIUM TIMES

 

The teachers union, NUT, had called for a boycott.

The competency test ordered by Edo government for teachers in public schools recorded low turn-out, as many teachers refused to participate in the exercise held on Saturday.
The test was scheduled to hold simultaneously in the three senatorial districts of the state.
When a correspondent visited the University of Benin, one of the venues, at 11.30 a.m. only 73 teachers were accredited.
Akinade Ojo, the Secretary, Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Edo Chapter, told journalists that teachers were directed to boycott the test.
“Six thousand primary school teachers were expected to present themselves for the test in Edo South, and from record less than 100 teachers were present for the test,’’ he said.
At the Auchi Polytechnic, centre for the test in Edo North Senatorial District, only 12 teachers wrote the test.

Bowen Students Go On Violent Demonstration

Students of Bowen University yesterday embarked on a violet demonstration in the school premises.They destroyed several school properties in the process as well as set several cars on fire.The students were protesting the high handedness of the new Vice Chancellor of the Institution.

According to some of them interviewed by CKN Nigeria,the new VC has introduced certain policies that was not acceptable to the students.Apart from increasing the school fees by over 40%,the VC have also ratio electricity in the campus in order to save cost. Generating sets in the school are now put on within a certain period in the campus,when there is no public power supply.He has also been accused of rationing food at the school's cafeteria.The students have vowed not to go back to their classes until the VC is removed.

Fear Of Boko Haram Attacks Forces Federal Government To Close Down Colleges

Fear of possible new attacks by Boko Haram militants in the troubled Northeast, where over 40 students were last week killed in Federal Government College, Yobe State has forced the government to formally close down all Federal Colleges in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
The supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, made the unprecedented announcement in Abuja on Wednesday through his spokesman, Simeon Nwakaudu, as the government appears to be losing faith in its ability to protect.

Barely two months after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), called off its nearly-six-month strike, the university system may soon be thrown into another round of crisis, which portends dire consequences, if not immediately nipped in the bud.

Colleges Of Education Lecturers Begin Nationwide Strike Today

Barely two weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, called off its five-months-old strike, lecturers in the Colleges of Education are set to begin a nationwide strike today.

This was made known in a letter to the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike in Abuja.

The letter, which was delivered by the General Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Mr. Nuhu Ogirima, lamented that the Federal Government had failed to address issues raised by the Union.

Unilorin Students to Get Ipad Minis Next Year

The Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mr Emmanuel Obafemi, has said that the institution would, from January 2014, be fully digital. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ilorin, Obafemi said that the development would make it possible for lecturers to be able to send assignments to their students via the Internet.

"As from Jan. 2014, University of Ilorin lecturers would be able to send assignments to their students through the Internet from the comfort of their homes,'' adding that students would also be able to respond via the same channel.

Over 70% Fail WAEC Nov/Dec 2013 Results

86,612 candidates, representing 29.17% of the total number of candidates who sat for the November/December examination of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics
The results released on Thursday how bad a state Nigeria's education is still in as the dismal performance of students in exams over the years leaves so much to be worried about.
Announcing the result at the WAEC office, Yaba, Lagos, Head of National Office, Mr Charles Eguridu said that a total of 308,217 candidates registered for the Nov/Dec 2013 WASSCE. 82 blind candidates registered and sat for the examination. From the figure, he noted, 17 candidates, representing 20.73% obtained credits in 5 subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
