Arsenal win hailed as greatest cup comeback

LONDON –  (AFP) – Arsenal’s 7-5 victory against Reading was on Wednesday hailed as the greatest comeback in League Cup history, after the Gunners overturned a 4-0 deficit to secure a place in the quarter-final draw.
The Times newspaper called the 12-goal thriller on Tuesday “The Miracle at the Majedski” while the Daily Telegraph’s correspondent said: “This was one of the craziest of cup ties, Mad Stad living up to its nickname.”
The Sun tabloid went further, describing the victory at Premier League strugglers Reading’s Majedski Stadium as “the greatest ever escape” in the history of the competition.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was also full of praise for his side and assessed that the victory was one of the best of his long career.
“We went from disaster to saving our pride,” Wenger said. “The fans stayed behind the team throughout and I have to give them credit. It was difficult to be worse in the second half than we were in the first.
“Maybe this is one of my greatest victories. You cannot play for Arsenal and give up, no matter what the score.
“This (tournament) is not one of our priorities but if we had gone out the way we played in the first half, it would not have been one of my proudest moments as well.

“But this was like a tennis game. It’s important to win and to be in the hat for the quarter-final.”
Arsenal head to Manchester United on Saturday, when they will return to the scene of one their most embarrassing scorelines in recent memory.
Wenger’s side suffered an 8-2 humiliation at Old Trafford last season and there seemed to be danger of history repeating itself against Reading, even though Wenger had fielded a largely second-string side.
They were 4-0 down before Walcott replied on the stroke of half-time.
But with the Gunners appearing to only have pride to play for, Oliver Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and Carl Jenkinson all struck to send the tie into extra time.
Giroud and Francis Coquelin even threw their shirts into the away end at the full-time whistle as they thought a replay was on the cards but that moment of farce only added to the drama on an extraordinary night.
It was not over there, as Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh and Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak swapped goals before Walcott and Chamakh killed off Reading for good deep into extra time.
Walcott, who is at the centre of a contract dispute, was himself unsure whether he had scored a hat-trick, despite walking off with the match ball.
“I’d love to have goal-line technology to get the hat-trick but if they’ve not given it, then well done Carl (Jenkinson)!” he said. “I’ll have to give the ball back to the referee!”
“Walcott did very well,” added Wenger. “I know he is a great player and many players did well. Theo scored goals and was efficient. He wasn’t the only one.”
Walcott urged his Arsenal team-mates to build on the victory before heading to Old Trafford.
“Hopefully we can take that into the Premier League,” he said. “We were good going forward, but maybe we were not great defensively at times. But we showed everyone what we can do and showed our character.”
Reading are yet to win in the Premier League this season and this collapse will do nothing to boost their confidence ahead of Sunday’s trip to bottom-placed Queens Park Rangers.
However, Reading manager Brian McDermott says the result against Arsenal will have no bearing on that or any future league games.
“It was suicide, what went on in the second half and extra time,” he said. “I wasn’t comfortable, even being 4-1 up, and I don’t know why. I just had that feeling. They hurt us and we didn’t play.
“But it has nothing to do with the league. You play each game on its merits. But I’ve never seen anything like it at Reading. It was extraordinary.”

Genevieve to Return Range Rover SUV to Owners in December

If rumours are anything to go by, then, Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji, who was made Range Rover Evogue SUV brand ambassador in June 2012, may be returning the car to Coscharis, the distributor of Land Rover brand of cars in Nigeria.

According to a chatter bird in the know, Genevieve will have to return the about N8million worth car due to what we hear is based on the terms she agreed to while signing the deal with the car distributor. The source, who claimed to be in the know said that Genny, as the actress is fondly called, was given two options while she was about to put pen to papers on the deal.

The first option, as we were told, was to have $100,000 and cruise with the car for six months as its ambassador, while the second option was to have the car for keeps and have about $50,000.

So, Genny, as the source said, went for the first option, which means she would return the car by December 2012. Efforts to contact Genevieve on phone to get speak to her on this issue proved futile.

Gerard Houllier hails Rodgers' influence at Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers - Liverpool logo

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has praised the influence of Brendan Rodgers as the current boss of the Premier League side, insisting that the future looks bright at Anfield.

The Frenchman, who enjoyed a successful spell with the club between 1998 and 2004, saw the 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby and liked what he saw from the new man.

"Brendan plays the right way and I'm pleased he's given a chance to some of the young players. Some are very good," Houllier told The Sun.

"Liverpool posed a major problem to Everton in changing the system in the second half and I thought Brendan was very clever. It really helped the team and in the end they probably could have won it."

The 65-year-old led Liverpool to a domestic cup treble in 2001 during his spell at the club and added the European Super Cup to the trophy cabinet later that year before being replaced by Rafael Benitez in 2004.

Houllier was also happy with the youngsters coming through the ranks at his old club, claiming that they can develop into star names at Anfield.

"Raheem Sterling could be a major player," he continued.

"Suso, Andre Wisdom and Joe Allen are all good. The future looks bright."

Hurricane Sandy: Ocean Surge May Hit Lagos In Seven Days

Lagosians need to be vigilant and be careful when they go to beaches as the State Government, yesterday alerted residents of a possible ripple effect of the hurricane currently ravaging some parts of the United States of America, such as on the state’s coastal areas within the next seven days.
has hit the United States hard with over 7 million residents without power, 15,000 flights cancelled in 3 days, and 48 lives lost, while several have been rendered homeless.
The alert was given by the state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Prince Segun Oniru; Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba as well as Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Taofeek Folami, at a joint media briefing in Alausa, Ikeja.
It would be recalled that an which claimed 15 lives occurred on August 17 at Kuramo Beach, Victoria Island.
However, a professor of climatology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor RNC Anyadike, countered that Nigeria could not suffer any ripple effect from the hurricane.
Asked if could suffer ripple effects from , Anyadike said: “It is not possible. We don’t have hurricanes in West Africa.
“Meanwhile, has already hit land, it will soon dissipate. What kind of ripple effect are they talking about? Do you know how far we are from New York?
“The only thing we are likely to experience is heavy rainfall occasioned by climate change not hurricane.”
Oniru attributed the likely ripple effect of the Hurricane to the location of , lying parallel to the South America region.
“We want to let Lagosians know what is going on, and what to expect, it is not to create panic, they should be careful around the ocean and lagoon. In the last five to six days, around the Caribbean, from Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and Hurricane Sandy has hit the east coast of America.
“Normally, when such happens, and the magnitude of it hits that part of the world, we always have a ripple effect in Lagos and around the West Coast,” Oniru said.
Ibirogba also urged residents to be vigilant, while he assured that the state government’s emergency response squad was on alert to manage any likely surge caused by the Hurricane.
Taofeek Folami, Special Adviser to the Lagos Governor on Environment, however, warned residents to refrain from dumping refuse in drainages and canals so as not to block passage of water.

Five Men's Fashion Tips for the Day

I’m sitting here scrolling through my phone, trying to get the creative juices flowing for this next article. Since Nigerian men and teens especially make so many fashion blunders, I thought I’d give you guys something you probably don’t see too often, a quick list of some men's fashion tips.

Here are 5 Quick Fashion tips:

1. Fit is King – The most dramatic improvement you can make in your style is to make sure everything fits impeccably. Most guys wear clothes that are too large or too tight. Make sure everything you wear is almost hugging the shape of your body – without being tight. Bad fit is an epidemic that you should cure yourself from.

2. Keep it simple – You want a wardrobe that looks great on you, but don’t overdo it. Don’t wear more than three pieces of jewelry or more than three colors; if possible, no jewelry at all. Don’t dress like WizKid if you're not performing at a show. If you want to be flashy, a simpler but stylish look would be sporting a black striped dress shirt with a white blazer, a dark pair of jeans, a dressy belt, and your sharpest dress shoes. You could also add a flashy watch or a simple accessory like an interesting necklace, but nothing more.

3. Change the way you see casual – casual doesn’t have to be boring. Have fun with collared shirts, or take some inspiration from those who approach casual a bit differently. But your safest bet is a round or v-nect tshirt, jeans and sneakers.

4. Pay attention to your supporting pieces - Some sweaters are lean and others are big and chunky. The first rule of thumb is that your top and bottom halves need to match. If you’re wearing a big, chunky, rugged fisherman knit sweater, your bottom needs to be rugged, too. Don’t wear a fisherman’s sweater with a beautiful silk-and-wool suit pant. Instead, wear it with something as casual as cargos or jeans, or dress it up with a Harris tweed blazer.

5. Never go shopping alone – Nigerian guys would probably be like 'WTF' at this one, but better safe than sorry. Never trust the sales people telling you 'Oga, e fit you die' because they just want make their market move. Shop with a friend who will give you their honest opinion.

Russel Brandl and Katy Perry Reunited at Lakers Season Opener

No, they are not back together, in case you're wondering.

The onetime spouses, Katy Perry and Russell Brand, both attended the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA season opener Tuesday, perhaps the first time they've shared any kind of public space since their divorce earlier this year.

It is important to point out that the pop princess and the Brand X host did not sit together—they were on opposite sides of the court in respective high-rent seating areas, according to eye witnesses—and there was no indication that they interacted.

But I trust that they both would have been informed as to the other's presence!
Of course, there were more awkward things than exes in the house tonight: Kobe Bryant and the home team lost to the Dallas Mavericks, 99-91, so no one was treated to an especially good show.
Also witnessing Dwight Howard and Steve Nash's disappointing regular-season debuts in Laker gold and purple? Jack Nicholson was also spotted wearing a t-shirt with a Halloween image of a jack-o-lantern on it.

Dudes, Seriously??!!

Ow! My eyes! It burns!… No, nothing entered it… Its seeing some ish dudes put on these days in the name of swag abi fashion (I’m not even sure anymore) that’s hurting my eyes…

First, it started with the matching colours…the shirts, the belt, with their shoes, then wristwatch and sunglasses, all colour-coded… Like c’mon, we know you guys know your colours, after all, you’re not in kindergarten… Puhleeze! You look like overgrown toddlers.

Second came the skinnys, which evolved to ‘super’ skinnys… Why da hell will we want to see your shape?… *puke* Right now, if you look at just the legs, you wouldn’t know if its a girl’s or a dude’s. Then the skinnys took a turn for the worse by coming in varieties of colours, light blue, purple, green, and my three most hated, orange, yellow, and pink…*smh* Are you guys serious? Wearing pink skinnys? Hmmm… Once upon a time, I thought that’s how we identified homos?!…hian!

And the third that assaults my sensibilities are the three-quaters called Carrots? ko Carots? (hope I spelt it well)… What was wrong with the three-quaters we had before? Ehn? That someone had to now put rubber inside the hem! Ok… Its not that its thaaat baaaad, its just that it really isn’t for everyone… Na by force to where am if e no fit you? *rme* Then if e finally fit you, how some dudes go come forget to rub cream on their ankles? They’ll now be looking like children of harmattan…tor, na una sabi o

I know some people will say I’m being judgmental, well, to such people I say ‘suck on it’… And if you fall into any category here, no hard feelings… I’m just a dude expressing my freedom of speech right…can I get an amen? Lol. Here's a link to some pictures of foreign men's fashion, because i sincerely don't know where nigerian boys learnt their dressings. Pictures of Men"s Fashion

Hurricane Sandy Hits United States of America

The people of the United States of America was hit by a horrific hurricane now called 'Hurricane Sandy'. Though no longer a hurricane, "post-tropical" superstorm Sandy packed a hurricane-sized punch as it slammed into the Jersey Shore on Monday, killing at least 11 people from West Virginia to North Carolina and Connecticut.
Sandy whipped torrents of water over the streets of Atlantic City, stretching for blocks inland and ripping up part of the vacation spot's fabled boardwalk. The storm surge set records in Lower Manhattan, where flooded substations caused a widespread power outage. It swamped beachfronts on both sides of Long Island Sound and delivered hurricane-force winds from Virginia to Cape Cod as it came ashore.
Sandy's wrath also prompted the evacuation of about 200 patients at NYU Langone Medical Center.
"We are having intermittent telephone access issues, and for this reason the receiving hospital will notify the families of their arrival," spokeswoman Lisa Greiner said.
In addition, the basement of New York's Bellevue Hospital Center flooded, and the hospital was running off of emergency backup power. Ian Michaels of the Office of Emergency Management said the main priority is to help secure additional power and obtain additional fuel and pumps for the hospital.
The storm hit near Atlantic City about 8 p.m. ET, the National Hurricane Center reported. It packed 80-mph winds at landfall, down from the 90 mph clocked earlier Monday. It has caused over 15billion dollars in damages, at least 13 killed and over 6.5 million people in 13 states left without power. Government offices are closed, buildings on fire, and total chaos are some effects of the horrific Hurricane Sandy. God Help America.
